What Is the U.S. Navy Body Fat Calculator?
The U.S. Navy body fat method estimates body fat percentage from height and simple tape measurements — not from body weight alone. Lieutenant Commander James Hodgdon and Mary Beth Beckett published the regression equations at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984 (reports 84-11 and 84-29), calibrating circumferences against hydrostatic weighing in U.S. Navy personnel. The method became widely used in military fitness programs and remains a common field estimate for civilians who want a tape-measure-only approach.

How to Measure Correctly
Align with Navy Guide 4 body composition procedures where possible. Self-measurement often adds error — assisted measurement at the anatomical sites below improves consistency.
- Height — standing, feet together, without shoes; measure to nearest 0.5 cm or ¼ in.
- Neck — bare skin, just below the larynx, tape perpendicular to the neck axis; do not flare the neck.
- Waist (men) — abdomen at the navel, tape parallel to the floor, normal breathing.
- Waist (women) — natural waist at minimal abdominal circumference (often midway navel–sternum); use smallest of several tries if unclear.
- Hip (women) — widest horizontal gluteal protrusion, feet together.

Accuracy and Limitations
Hodgdon & Beckett (1984) reported correlations near r ≈ 0.87–0.90 vs hydrostatic weighing in development samples, with standard errors of estimate around ~4 percentage points. Field measurement error, non-average body shapes, ethnicity-related distribution differences, pregnancy, and older adults can widen real-world disagreement. DEXA, MRI, and other laboratory methods generally provide more accurate body composition when available.
TDEE estimate error comes from two stacked layers — and the second is usually bigger in practice.
Layer 1: BMR formula error
Mifflin-St Jeor predicts resting metabolic rate within ~10% for roughly 82% of non-obese adults and ~70% of obese adults (Frankenfield et al., 2005). That is ±150–200 kcal for many people.
Layer 2: Activity multiplier error
